Who Are We?
We are a nonprofit, all volunteer
newspaper committed to presenting the reality of homelessness and
focused on building community.
In
San Antonio there are 23,000 people experiencing homelessness.
"Agencies are reporting a
significant increase in the number of families seeking shelter. SAM
Ministries, one of the largest shelter operators in town, is
reporting that they are turning away about fifteen families a week
who are seeking shelter."
(U.S. Mayors Report, 2002)
To add insult to injury, the city San Antonio generates less funds and
therefore spends less (of their generated funds) per capita on the homeless
situation than any other city in the entire United States!( U.S. Mayors
Report, 2002)
Veterans:
A third of the adult homeless population has served their country in the
armed services. About 10% of U.S. veterans experiencing homelessness suffer
from posttraumatic stress disorder. Roughly 57% are Black or Hispanic.
(Veterans Administration webpage, 2003)
Victims of domestic violence and children:
1.35 million children are likely to experience homelessness in a given year.
Persons suffering from mental illness:
22% of single adults in the homeless population suffer from severe or
persistent mental illness.

What
contributes to homelessness?
1. lack of affordable housing
2. lack of affordable healthcare
3. addiction disorders
4. declining wages
(Note: This study was based on national surveys of service providers. Since
not all people experiencing homelessness utilize service providers, the
actual numbers of people experiencing homelessness is not an exact
count.)
